The UK is one of the biggest members of Europe with regard to population and economic size. The UK involves Wales, Northern Ireland, Scotland and England and the sum of all populations reaches 66.48 million of inhabitants. The GDP of the country in 2018 was of 2.8 trillion dollars. It is the fifth economy in the world after the US, China, Japan and Germany.
United Kingdom is a net contributor to the European Union as it contributes more than it receives. The UK receives an amount of 6.326 billion of euros by the European Union, which ends up to be 0.28% of UK’s Gross National Income (GNI). On the other hand, The UK contributes to the EU with 10.575 billion of euros which is 0.46% of its GNI.
The UK is a unitary state within a framework of a constitutional monarchy in which the Monarch, currently Elizabeth II, is the head of state and the Prime Minister, currently Boris Johnson, is the head of government. The executive power is exercised in the British Government and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland also in their government. The legislative power consists on two chambers, the House of Commons and the house of Lords. The Judiciary is independent from both and the Supreme Court is the highest authority within this branch. Since the 1920s is a multiparty system, with two dominant parties; Conservative and Labor Party. In the UK it is maintained the First-Past-The-Post system for the general elections, in which voters elect the candidate and the candidate with most votes wins the election. This system helps to maintain the dominance of this two parties, however, lastly a third party (Liberal Democrats) was needed in order to obtain the parliament majority.
The current government of the UK is leaded by the Prime Minister Boris Johnson who is member of the conservative party. The party leaded by Theresa May by that time, won the elections of July 2017 with the majority of seats in the House of Commons, however, they lost their majority. They needed to form a minority government with the support of the Democratic Unionist Party of Northern Ireland. (DUP). Theresa May decided to resign power and Boris Johnson in July 2019 followed her legacy of the party, pushing strongly for the Brexit of the UK.
Following on Brexit, it is one of the major issues of the UK. On June 23, 2016 a referendum took place in order to vote for the independence of the UK from the EU or not. The people voted to leave the European Union and the UK followed the Article 50 of the constitution through the Lisbon Treaty and they proposed a date to leave the EU. That date has been post-poned until today with the deadline of the 31 of January of 2020. It is the third time that they post-poned the day which might to open the possibility to update the blog again if the keep post-pone in it.
